Personal trainer

First session with personal trainer today. Ow. Took me 45 minutes and 4 glasses of water before I could reliably stand up again. I'm pretty sure I managed to tank my blood volume with all the exercise. Still, great endorphin rush! :-)

No gamma for you

I tried to gamma-adjust the display... bad idea. Apparently the gamma varies based on viewing angle.

New toys!

New video card: eVGA GTX 260 (not the Core 216 version, unfortunately)
New monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 2233sw

OMG fun. The GTX 260 is a monster!

QOTD

"Basically, play[ing] EVE is exactly like using Windows - except instead of selecting Cut, Copy and Open With, you're selecting Target Lock, Orbit, and Activate Acceleration Gate."

Madness

New itinerary:

23DEC SEA/SFO on Alaska Airlines
24DEC SFO/JFK/YUL on American Airlines

Staying at my sister's place, but she's leaving at 7pm *today*, so I have to work out some way to get the key from her...

Christmas cancelled due to snow

Flight cancelled. Rebooking desk says nothing, nothing, and nothing. Not today, not tomorrow, not via Vancouver, not on other carriers. My father is trying his extra-special super-Elite service people, but nothing is nothing, you know?

Strangely enough, not bothered by any of this. I guess I'm just too used to the Christmas shenanigans of air travel.

Delayed!

Bah. I could have slept in -- GDP in ORD has forced an estimated 2 hour delay on wheels-up.

Standby? No, cancelled!

Tried to standby on the earlier flight despite a 35 minute connection time, but apparently it's cancelled as per standard Chicago-O'Hare policy. Luck is apparently holding out.

Seattle/Tacoma International Airport

30 minute security lines. Not too bad. People camped out here due to Horizon and Alaska canceling flights whole day at a time. Looks like I got lucky -- leaving yesterday or tomorrow would have been quite the unpleasant experience based on what I'm hearing here.

No more car! :) :(

Sold the car yesterday. Market for the car has unfortunately tanked in the past couple months (rental car companies are letting the '07 priuses go now), so I didn't get a great price for it, but at least I'm not paying car loan + insurance anymore. We have flexcar zipcar to cover things like grocery trips &c.

It's actually kind of scary. Just a touch. Despite the fact that I almost never drove the thing, having it available gave me a certain comfort -- I could always jump in the car and drive if I absolutely had to get somewhere right now. I guess I can use a taxi now... still, it's unnerving.

I cannot has multicast?

I've long wondered why multicast and push-based data systems (push-RSS? push-IMAP?) haven't happened yet on a wide scale. This wonderful article explains why that is (amongst other things) in economic terms and proposes two effective workarounds (charge for it and polling).

Pondering on the LHC

What if... the many-worlds interpretation is correct, and an isolated Higgs boson has appropriately catastrophic results. Then we'd never see an isolated Higgs boson, right?

*giggle*
